To strengthen its construction team at the CTAO’s northern array site, CTAO-North, on the island of La Palma, Spain, the CTAO Central Organisation is seeking a Construction Lead Engineer to support the integration of telescopes with the site infrastructure. Among other key responsibilities, the successful candidate will represent the CTAO in the coordination and support of activities with the Medium-Size Telescope (MST) In-Kind Contributor (IKC) team, which will install five MSTs on the northern array site. 

Your responsibilities:

  • Be the on-site single point of contact for the IKCs and CTAO
  • Coordinate the local activities between the IKCs and the host organisation IAC (Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias)
  • Follow up on and document the construction progress and verifications for the instrumentation and infrastructure during erection and commissioning of telescopes
  • Report progress to and coordinate the activities with the CTAO Construction Programme Manager
  • Define profiles, recruit and coordinate the CTAO-North on-site construction team
  • Maintain a productive working relationship with all parties involved in the construction process 
  • Support the CTAO on-site AIV (assembly, integration, verification) system in close collaboration with the on-site AIV manager
  • Assure on-site safety following the hand-over of systems to the CTAO with the support of the CTAO-North Site Safety Engineer
  • Define the CTAO-North on-site construction budget
  • Support the CTAO Project Office in the acceptance of telescopes and their subsystems
  • Together with the operations team, populate the CTAO Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software with inventories and maintenance documentation, to be delivered by the IKCs

Your qualifications, experience, and skills: 

  • University degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering
  • Five years of proven experience in on-site construction and AIV, preferably linked to astronomical telescopes and instrumentation, including management and organisation of construction sites and related staff
  • Familiarity and experience with complex mechanical and electromechanical systems, and the ability to understand new systems quickly
  • Knowledge of or the willingness to learn about concrete foundation construction and related quality control processes
  • Experience in the use of project planning software like MS Project and of industrial CMMS systems
  • Understanding of interfaces and interactions between subsystems
  • Field experience in AIV and commissioning of machines
  • Ability to write reports and technical documentation
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent English, spoken and written, to interact with colleagues, project partners and members of scientific institutions (knowledge of Spanish is a strong asset)
  • Standard MS office tools knowledge
  • Valid driver’s license

You will be reporting to: Construction Programme Manager 

Workplace: CTAO-North Site on the Island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The Construction Lead Engineer will work at the Observatorio de Los Roque de Los Muchachos (2200m asl) or at the CTAO office in Brena Baja. Occasional travels to the CTAO headquarters in Bologna, Italy, the CTAO-South Site, or to the location of IKC teams may be required. 

What we offer: This position is full-time and is funded for the duration of the CTAO construction and operation project. Contractual details and salary are subject to negotiation.
