To strengthen its Project Office at the CTAO-North site, on the island of La Palma (Spain), the CTAO Central Organisation is seeking an On-site Support Engineer to ensure the smooth operation of the telescopes and infrastructure. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining and operating of the observatory equipment at highest level of availability and reliability, contributing directly to our ongoing scientific research efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all telescope electromechanical systems and equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with the research and operations teams to ensure optimal performance and availability of the telescopes.
  • Monitor system performance and availability; suggest system improvements for efficient operations and reliability.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and help programming maintenance and upgrades.
  • Provide technical support and training to staff as needed.
  • Use the CTAO CMMS software to define, execute and report maintenance plans and activities.
  • Define and maintain the required system spare part level, to assure uninterrupted operation of the observatory, using the CTAO CMMS.

Your experience and skills

Minimum requirements:

  • University degree in Engineering, preferably mechanics, or mechatronics
  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience in development, installation, and operation of high precision machinery and/or electromechanical systems, preferably linked to astronomical telescope and instrumentation

Experience and demonstrated skills in the following areas:

  • Familiarity and experience with complex mechanical and electromechanical systems and the ability to understand new systems quickly
  • Ability to use CAD software and relevant engineering tools like Matlab/Simulink
  • Experience in the use of industrial CMMS systems
  • Understanding of interfaces and interactions between subsystems.
  • Understanding of reliability aspects and associate analyses
  • Field experience in AIV (assembly, integration, verification) and commissioning of machines
  • Experience in one or some of the main disciplines related to Telescopes (structures and fine mechanics, opto-mechanics, control electronics…) will be advantageous.
  • Ability to write reports and technical documentation
  • Excellent English, spoken and written, to interact with colleagues, project partners and members of scientific institutions
  • Standard MS office tools knowledge
  • Knowledge of Spanish is a strong asset

You will be reporting to: CTAO-North Site Manager

Workplace: The position will be located at the CTAO-North site on the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain. The On-site Support Engineer will work as needed at the Observatorio de Los Roque de Los Muchachos (2200m asl) or at the CTAO low elevation office in La Palma, which requires a valid driver’s license. Night work may be occasionally required. The On-site Support Engineer will interact and collaborate with the Project Office in Bologna and the CTAO-South site in Chile in case of complex engineering problems and on RAM aspects. Occasional travels to the CTAO headquarters in Bologna, Italy, the CTAO-South site, or to the locations of in-kind contribution teams may be required.

What we offer: This position is full-time and is funded for the duration of the CTAO construction and operation project. Contractual details and salary are subject to negotiation.
