The CTAO Central Organisation is seeking systems engineers for its project team in Bologna, Italy. The Systems Engineering (SE) team operates on different systems engineering matters that cover requirements management, configuration control and various engineering challenges, for example, model-based systems engineering, as well as safety, RAM analysis, modelling and control system concepts. The team provides support to the In-Kind Contributors teams (IKCs), which are composed of engineering and scientific personnel from institutes of participating countries, organised into consortia and responsible for the delivery of one telescope type (Large-Sized, Medium-Sized, or Small-Sized Telescopes). Other contributors deliver fundamental software, calibration and auxiliary equipment. The SE team operates at a system level, in collaboration with the telescope coordination team, to ensure that the system works properly when all the delivered parts are assembled.
Your key responsibilities:
- Requirement specification management
- Support the Systems Architect in defining the observatory model
- Analyse and model Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM)
- Contribute to the follow-up on the technical and programmatic work of the IKC teams delivering the telescopes, with special emphasis on monitoring Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) tasks
- Monitor, participate and/or supervise formal acceptance testing of telescopes on-site in collaboration with other CTAO teams
- Review and/or prepare verification plans and procedures and compliance documents
- Participate in and/or organise product design and manufacturing reviews
- Evaluate safety analysis of telescope systems, concerning design and operational safety
- Prepare the risk assessment and work procedures linked to operation and maintenance
- Report to the CTAO Project Office at regular progress meetings
Your qualifications and technical skills:
- Master’s Degree in mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering – a physics degree will be evaluated if system engineering experience is documented
- Understanding of:
- requirement management, traceability, compliance test procedure, verification and validation
- product assurance principles, configuration management
- RAM and RAM analysis
- model-based systems engineering
- Ability to write procedures, minutes, and reports
- Knowledge of Jama, Reliasoft or other RAM modelling tool will be considered an asset
- Excellent English, spoken and written; knowledge of German and/or Spanish will be considering an asset
- Excellent ability to work in an international environment, good interpersonal skills and a strong sense of team spirit; experience in multidisciplinary international scientific projects is considered a plus
- Ability to interact with CTAO colleagues of various engineering backgrounds, as well as with engineers and scientists within project partner institutions
You’ll be reporting to: Lead Systems Engineer
Your duty station: Bologna, Italy, with ability and willingness to travel within the EU and to the CTAO construction sites, occasionally for a few weeks, as needed
